The University of Malaga in Spain is offering free tuition to two students from Acadia to attend their six-week Spanish language summer program (one student) and the Spanish program for International students during the fall term of 2011 (one student). The students will be responsible for the other costs (travel expenses, accommodations and food) although the university will provide assistance in seeking suitable accommodations.
Acadia credits will be granted for these courses; the exact number and level of the credits will be determined upon completion of the program but would typically be 6 hours of Arts electives for the summer program and the equivalent of 15 credit hours in Spanish for the Fall term (as per our regular study abroad program).
1. Six week summer program, 2011 (Summer competition):
This competition is open to students who will have completed SPAN 1013-1023 by the end of this term with a grade of at least A- in SPAN 1013 and who is maintaining a strong performance in 1023. The successful applicant will be a student who intends to continue their studies in Spanish.
2. Fall term 2011 (Fall competition):
This competition is open to Acadia Spanish majors who will have completed their four second-year Spanish courses by the end of this term, with grades of at least A- in SPAN 2013 (Intermediate Spanish) and SPAN 2113 (Spanish conversation) and who is maintaining a strong performance in SPAN 2023 and SPAN 2123.
How to apply:
To be considered for one these awards, you should complete the application form (available on the Spanish section web page) and submit this with a short CV and a letter of interest explaining why you would like to be considered for this opportunity and why you think you are a suitable candidate. Applicants for the Summer competition should write their letter in English (maximum of 300 words). Applicants for the Fall competition should write in Spanish (maximum of 450 words). Applications for the Summer competition must reach Elke Willmann, Administrative Assistant in the Department of Languages and Literatures (BAC 333) by midnight on February 14th (elke.willmann@acadiau.ca). Applications for the Fall competition may be submitted up until midnight on February 28th. The successful candidates will be selected by a committee made up of the Professors from the Spanish unit and the Head of the Department of Languages and Literatures and will be notified as soon as possible after the deadline. All candidates will be notified of the outcome of their application.
