SPAN 4523:  Indigenous cultures in Peruvian 20th century literature

Literary ‘indigenismo’ is a movement that tried to integrate the cultural heritage of the indigenous people into Latin American literature which until the 20th century had been orientated strongly towards European culture. Peru being the country in Latin America with the most important indigenous majority and the centre of ‘indigenismo’, this course will focus on the most outstanding Peruvian exponents of the movement. In-class discussion of poems, short stories, essays and one outstanding novel will give students an understanding of this literary phenomenon and its ideological and political background. (The course will be given in Spanish).
